Castor Oil

Rosemary Oil vs Castor Oil: Which Is Better for Your Hair?

Quick answer: They do different jobs. Rosemary oil is best for the scalp: it is the oil with clinical evidence for hair growth, and in a light carrier it suits regular massage and dandruff-prone scalps. Castor oil is best for the lengths, ends, eyebrows and eyelashes: it is very thick and deeply moisturising, which reduces breakage. Most people get the best results by using both.

When to choose rosemary oil

Choose rosemary if your main concern is hair fall, thinning, a flaky or itchy scalp, or you want an oil you can use regularly without heaviness. In a 2015 randomised trial (Panahi et al., SKINmed), rosemary oil increased hair count about as much as 2% minoxidil over 6 months, with less itching.

When to choose castor oil

Choose castor if your hair is dry, frizzy or breaking at the ends, or if you want to condition your eyebrows and eyelashes. It is too thick to use on its own for regular scalp massage, so mix it with a lighter oil for the scalp.

How to use rosemary and castor oil together

  1. Scalp: massage rosemary hair oil into the scalp for 5 minutes.
  2. Lengths: smooth 3–5 drops of castor oil through the mid-lengths and ends.
  3. Leave: 1 hour minimum, or overnight once a week.
  4. Wash: shampoo twice with a mild sulphate-free shampoo.
  5. Brows and lashes: a tiny amount of castor oil at bedtime.

For an intensive scalp mask, you can also mix 2–3 parts rosemary hair oil with 1 part castor oil.

FAQs

Can I mix rosemary oil and castor oil?

Yes. Mixing a rosemary hair oil with a little castor oil gives a richer scalp mask. Never mix pure rosemary essential oil into castor oil at high strength; a ready-made rosemary hair oil is already safely diluted.

Which oil is better for hair fall?

For hair fall from the root, rosemary has stronger evidence. For hair fall from breakage, castor oil helps by conditioning the lengths.

Which is better for oily scalps?

A lightweight rosemary & jojoba hair oil. Jojoba is close to the scalp's natural sebum and won't feel heavy.
